Hockey in New Jersey is proud to announce that Newark's Laura Lima (Science Park '17) has been selected as one of four recipients for the 2017 NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund academic scholarship!

The NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund academic scholarship is awarded to students who are active in a National Hockey League Hockey Is For Everyone youth hockey organization, with goals of pursuing higher education in a variety of majors and focuses. Since 2012, the initiative has awarded scholarships to 15 exceptional high school students, including 2015 recipient and HNJ alumni, Austin Verissimo, who now attends Duke University.

“Winning the Thurgood Marshall scholarship shows that if you work hard for something, you'll receive it,” Lima said. “All the hard work I put in on and off the ice, shows what could be accomplished!”

Lima will be attending Rowan University this fall, where she will study criminal justice and psychology. She also plans on continuing playing hockey for Rowan’s girls club team.

Laura joined the program in 2011 and has been a vital part of both the boys and girls teams. She has represented HNJ at the 2014 Willie O’Ree Skills Weekend and was HNJ’s 2014 Brian “Pudge” Hollander winner for participant who best exemplifies character, commitment, and sportsmanship. She also has served as a captain for HNJ and both East Side boys & girls teams.

“Hockey helped make me a better student athlete. My coaches always said that we had to have good grades to continue playing hockey, and without hockey for me, I would have probably fallen in the wrong path,” Lima concluded. “Hockey has encouraged me to work hard not only during practice and games, but with my school work also.”

Her mother Renata Dias added, "I am very thankful for Hockey in New Jersey because it has kept Laura focused and active. She learned not to give up and always try harder, the importance of having good grades and of course building a healthy mind."

From everyone at Hockey in New Jersey - Congratulations Laura!
