2017 HNJ Newark Spring Details, Schedules, & Registration Info

Newark Season Runs 4/1 - 6/10

Hockey in New Jersey is excited to announce the 2017 HNJ Newark Spring Season!

In conjunction with the New Jersey Devils, Hockey in New Jersey will be providing ice time this spring for Newark children. The spring season will run from Saturday, April 1 until Saturday, June 10 at the Barnabas Health Hockey House @ Prudential Center (http://barnabashealthhockeyhouse.com/).

HNJ Newark is open to city residents only (proof of address required at sign-up). Boys & girls ages 6 – 18 can join with NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Participants will be fully equipped and learn ice hockey completely FREE of cost!

On-Ice Curriculum

Learn to Play Clinics: Participants will be grouped by skill level and will graduate to higher levels as they progress. Players will be introduced to hockey fundamentals in skating, passing, & shooting.

Goals For Garrett Goalie Clinics: Goaltenders will receive specialized goalie training every Saturday.

Cross-Ice Games/Leagues: Each age group will participate in cross-ice games to maximize skill development and game concepts. Each age group will have a championship at season’s end.

Middle School House League: Middle School aged participants will play full ice games and compete for the HNJ Cup.

Semi-Travel Teams: Advanced participants will comprise Semi-Travel teams that will play teams across the state.

Program Features

RWJBarnabas Health Concussion Screenings: On Saturday, 4/8 – RWJ Barnabas Health will perform free concussion screenings for HNJ Newark participants.

Academic Monitoring: All u14 & u18 participants will be required to submit report cards every quarter. HNJ participants struggling with grades, behavior, and/or attendance will be required to complete HNJ Weekly Progress Report protocol to continue participation in HNJ.

SAT Prep & Mentoring Program: Select u18 participants will have access to college preparatory training, learn the college application process, and be introduced to college life and expectations. In addition, program members will work with mentors to build social and emotional skills needed for future successes.

Registration & Equipment Process

Enrolling in Hockey in New Jersey is a two-step process. Each child must REGISTER and then attend an EQUIPMENT HANDOUT to be sized for equipment.

STEP 1: REGISTER

To reserve your child's spot for HNJ Newark, you can register by:

  1. ONLINE: Register by signing up on-line (Button is below)
  2. PRINT: Complete the following forms and bring to an Equipment Handout date
    1. English Registration Forms
    2. Spanish Registration Forms 
  3. IN-PERSON: Fill out the forms at the Equipment Handout dates

STEP 2: EQUIPMENT HANDOUT

All new participants MUST ATTEND an Equipment Handout to be sized for gear and skates (No equipment will be handed out to a participant without a parent/guardian). Handouts will take place at the Ironbound Rec Center.

**Equipment is first come, first serve. HNJ recommends arriving early to each Equipment Handout.**

RETURNING PLAYERS NEEDING NEW EQUIPMENT: If a returning player has outgrown their equipment, please bring the gear to an Equipment Handout date to exchange the gear. Additionally, if players buy their own equipment, we ask that you return your old gear to HNJ for new participants.
